Google Ads

Ads run on the calls they produce.

Google Ads can put you at the top of the page the same day. Whether that's worth paying for comes down to whether the clicks turn into work. That's what this is judged on.

What's actually managed

Paid search wastes money fastest when it's set up broad and left alone. This isn't that.

Built around your trade and suburbs

Campaigns target the searches someone actually types when they need the job done, in the areas you're willing to travel to, not a broad match aimed at everything.

Tracked to the call

Conversion tracking is set up so a click that turns into a phone call or a quote request is visible, not just a number of clicks that may or may not have meant anything.

A budget you set

You decide what you're comfortable spending. Reporting explains what the spend did, in plain terms, rather than a dashboard full of metrics with no context.

Week to week, that's checking which search terms are actually triggering the ads and adding the ones that waste clicks to a negative list, adjusting bids on what's converting and pulling back on what isn't, and keeping the ad copy matched to what the landing page actually offers. It doesn't include a redesign of your website or a rewrite of your Google Business Profile. Those are separate problems with separate fixes, done on separate pages.

No lock-in on the spend

The ad account and the budget are yours to control. The account is opened under your business's name and your billing, not tucked inside an agency's master account where switching suppliers later means starting again from an empty history. If a campaign isn't earning its keep, it gets changed or turned off, not left running because it's already been paid for. It's the same ownership rule the rest of the site applies to a domain, applied here to an ad account instead.

What counts as working

Clicks and impressions are easy to report and easy to feel good about. Neither tells you whether the phone rang. What matters is answered calls and booked jobs, tracked separately from the spend that produced them, so a quiet week can be traced back to what actually caused it.

Sometimes that cause is the campaign: wrong suburbs, wrong search terms, budget spent on clicks that were never going to convert. Sometimes it isn't. Calls that ring out, quotes that never get followed up, an enquiry form nobody checks over a weekend, those cost jobs just as surely as a badly built campaign, and no amount of Google Ads work fixes them.

Why your trade and suburb change the shape of it

How someone searches for a job differs by trade far more than most campaigns assume. "Near me" dominates some trades' searches and barely registers in others, where the plain trade name or a specific job type carries the volume instead. That's the honest reason a campaign built off a generic template wastes part of its budget: it bids on phrasing nobody in that trade is actually typing.

Suburb works the same way. Some trades draw jobs from a tight local radius, others from across a whole metro area, and treating every suburb list as if it should look the same either shuts real jobs out or burns spend on clicks from an area you'd never actually drive to. Both get set from what the trade and the patch actually look like, not a default list plugged in from somewhere else.

When ads aren't the right spend yet

Paid search puts a business in front of people already searching, and that only pays off if what they land on can close the job. A site that's slow, unclear about what you do, or missing an easy way to get in touch turns paid clicks into wasted spend. A Google Business Profile with stale hours or unanswered reviews loses jobs that the ads paid to bring to the door.

Worth checking first, not after. If either isn't in shape, fix that before switching ads on, so there's somewhere solid for the click to land. It's what we'll say even when it means less work for us right now.
