Measuring a lawn that isn't a neat rectangle
Very few lawns are a perfect rectangle. Most have a garden bed cutting into one corner, a path crossing them, a tree or a shed sitting somewhere in the middle, or a curved edge along a driveway. The most reliable way to measure an area like that is to break it into simple rectangles on paper first: sketch the rough shape, divide it into two, three or four rectangles that together cover the space, measure the length and width of each one, and add the areas together before entering a single total.
This calculator gives you two ways to work with that number. If your lawn genuinely is a simple rectangle, enter the length and width directly and let the calculator work out the area. If it isn't, do the rectangle-splitting by hand first and switch to entering the area directly, as one combined figure. Either way, measure to the nearest ten or twenty centimetres where you can, because turf is sold and priced by the roll, and rounding errors in a measurement compound across a whole lawn far more than they would on a single tile or a tin of paint.
Curved edges are the trickiest part. A driveway edge or a garden bed with a sweeping curve does not fit neatly into a rectangle, so measure it as a rectangle that slightly overstates the curved section, using the widest point of the curve rather than the narrowest. It is far better to have a little too much turf on hand than to run a metre short along a curved border with the delivery truck already gone.
Why you order extra for cuts
Turf comes in rolls or slabs of a fixed size, and almost no real lawn matches that size exactly along every edge. Every border where the lawn meets a path, a garden bed, a driveway or a fence line usually needs a cut roll, and the offcut from that cut is not always useful somewhere else in the same lawn, particularly on an irregular or curved boundary. That is what the wastage percentage in this calculator is standing in for: the gap between the lawn's raw area and the area you actually need to buy once cutting losses are accounted for.
A simple rectangular lawn with straight, unobstructed edges needs comparatively little extra. A lawn with a lot of garden beds cut into it, an island bed in the middle, curved paths, or an oddly shaped block will waste more, because there are more edges generating offcuts and fewer of those offcuts line up usefully with another gap elsewhere in the lawn. There is no single correct percentage for every job, which is why this calculator asks you to set it yourself rather than assuming a number that would be wrong for either a simple or a complicated lawn.
Turf is perishable, and that changes how you plan the job
Unlike a tin of paint or a box of tiles, turf is a living, perishable product from the moment it is harvested. It arrives as freshly cut grass and soil, rolled tightly, and it starts to suffer almost immediately if it sits around. Rolled turf left stacked in the heat, especially through a Victorian summer, can start to yellow, sweat and even rot within a day if it is not laid and watered promptly. This is very different from most other trade materials, where a delivery sitting on site for a few extra days before the job starts is a minor inconvenience rather than a real risk to the product itself.
Because of this, ordering the right amount matters more with turf than with almost anything else covered by a calculator like this one. Running short and having to order a second, smaller batch a few days later is a genuine problem, not just an inconvenience, because that second batch may come from a different paddock or a different cutting, with a slightly different colour, grass density or maturity to what is already down. Turf suppliers generally deliver to order rather than holding large amounts of pre-cut stock on hand, so a follow-up order is rarely same-day, and the lawn you are trying to establish sits half-finished in the meantime.
Order what the calculator suggests, have the ground fully prepared before the delivery truck arrives, and plan to lay the same day it is delivered wherever possible. If a delay is unavoidable, keep the rolls in as much shade as you can find, unstack them so air can move between rolls rather than leaving them in a tight pallet, and water the stack lightly to stop it drying out and cooking in its own heat. None of that is a substitute for laying promptly, but it buys you a bit of time if the weather or your own schedule does not cooperate on the planned day.
Roll size, and why it is worth checking with the supplier
Turf roll and slab sizes are not standardised across every supplier the way, say, a sheet of plasterboard is. Different growers cut to different dimensions, and even the same supplier might offer more than one roll size depending on the variety of grass and how it is harvested. This calculator asks for the roll size in square metres because there genuinely isn't one figure that applies everywhere. Ask your supplier directly what size they cut, and use that figure rather than guessing, since an incorrect roll size will throw the roll count off even if the underlying area is measured correctly.
It is also worth asking the supplier how they round a delivery order. Some will only deliver in whole pallet quantities regardless of the exact roll count you ask for, which can mean the practical minimum order is larger than the number this calculator gives you. Better to know that before delivery day than to be surprised by a bigger invoice or a stack of turf you were not expecting.
Underlay, spread depth and why it is a separate decision
Underlay, whether that is a levelling layer of sand, a soil blend, or a specific turf underlay product, sits beneath the new turf to even out the ground and give the roots something workable to establish into. How deep a layer you spread is a decision based on the state of your existing ground, not a fixed industry number, which is why this calculator asks for the spread depth yourself rather than assuming one. A lawn area that is already reasonably level and has decent topsoil might need only a thin layer to fine-tune the surface. An area with poor or compacted soil, or one that has been recently disturbed by construction work, often needs a deeper layer to give the turf a real chance of establishing well.
This calculator works out the underlay volume from the area you are turfing and the depth you enter, converted into cubic metres, which is how most landscape suppliers sell soil, sand and turf underlay by the load. If you are ordering both turf and underlay from the same supplier, it is worth asking whether they deliver both together, since a single combined delivery is often more efficient than coordinating two separate trucks arriving on different days, particularly given how quickly the turf itself needs to go down once it lands.
Getting the ground ready before the turf arrives
None of the measuring above matters much if the ground underneath isn't ready when the delivery truck turns up. Clear the area of old grass, weeds and any debris, level it roughly, spread and rake the underlay evenly, and give the whole area a light water the day before if it's been dry. A well-prepared bed lets you lay turf quickly once it arrives rather than trying to prep and lay on the same afternoon while freshly cut rolls sit in the sun getting warmer by the hour.
Watering in the first few weeks
Getting the roll count and underlay right is only half the job. New turf needs consistent watering in the first two to three weeks while its roots establish into the underlay below, and that watering schedule is far more forgiving on soil that has been prepared properly than on ground that was rushed. A daily light watering in the first week, tapering off as the roots take hold, is the usual approach in most parts of Victoria, though a hot, windy stretch of weather will dry a new lawn out faster than a mild one and may need extra attention regardless of the calendar.
It's worth timing a turf order around the weather forecast where you can, rather than just around your own availability. Laying new turf right before a run of hot, dry days makes that establishment period harder than it needs to be, and a lawn that struggles in its first fortnight often shows patchy, uneven growth for months afterwards even once it does eventually establish. A cooler, overcast stretch, or laying late in the day rather than in full midday sun, gives the turf an easier start.
